Pacemaker Implantation
A pacemaker is a small implanted device used to help regulate heartbeat in the chest. It acts as a barrier to prevent the heart from beating too slowly. Surgery is required to implant a pacemaker in the chest. A pacemaker is implanted to help control your heart rate. Your physician could suggest getting a temporary pacemaker if your heartbeat is slow (bradycardia) following a heart attack, surgery, or medication overdose but is otherwise expected to mend. Permanent pacemakers can be inserted to treat persistently sluggish or irregular heartbeats, as well as heart failure. The heart is a strong, fist-sized pump with four chambers: two on the left and two on the right. Your heart beats between 60 and 100 beats per minute when an adult is at rest. The upper and lower chambers of your heart cooperate with the electrical system of your heart to maintain this proper heart rate.
