Renal Angioplasty

The renal arteries that feed blood to the kidneys are opened wider by a treatment called renal artery angioplasty. The main reason for this arterial blockage is a narrowing of the renal artery (renal artery stenosis). Atherosclerosis, or fibrous disease of the arteries, is the main cause of renal artery stenosis. Blood flow to the kidney is impacted when the renal artery is obstructed. The goal of angioplasties is to break up the block and resume normal blood flow. By filtering blood, the kidney regulates the body's salt and fluid levels. The body retains fluid when the blood is unable to reach the kidneys to filter out salt and water. Renin, a hormone that causes the blood vessels to stiffen and helps the body retain salt and water, is also released by the kidney. Renovascular hypertension is brought on by the blood arteries becoming stiffer and the resulting increase in pressure.
