A tiny catheter is inserted into the damaged renal artery during a technique known as angioplasty, which includes renal artery stenting. A balloon is attached to the end of an angioplasty catheter to dilate or inflate the narrowed region. Because angioplasty is a minimally invasive technique, no part of the body is cut during its execution—only tiny incisions are made. A catheterization laboratory, which is a chamber with specialized X-ray and imaging equipment, is where angioplasty is performed. Before the procedure, you will receive medication to help you relax, but you will be awake. You are also given a contrast dye that makes your arteries easier to see on the imaging equipment. You may feel some discomfort during the procedure, but it is generally not painful.
