Chronic Total Occlusion Treatment
A chronic complete occlusion (CTO) is a blockage in your coronary arteries, which are the blood channels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the heart. A blockage is usually caused by a fatty substance called plaque accumulating and restricting your arteries. If you have coronary artery disease, you are more prone to develop a CTO. A chronic total occlusion (CTO) is a complete blockage in one of your coronary arteries that lasts three months or longer. The blood vessels that deliver blood to your heart are known as coronary arteries. CTOs can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, or a heart attack by restricting the blood supply to your heart. Chronic complete occlusions occur when a fatty substance known as plaque accumulates in one or more of your coronary arteries. This plaque accumulation, known as atherosclerosis, causes arterial narrowing and stiffening. Coronary artery disease happens when atherosclerosis develops in your coronary arteries. Coronary angiography is often used to diagnose a persistent complete blockage. A contrast dye is injected into your blood arteries during coronary angiography. On an X-ray, the dye highlights your blood vessels and shows how blood flows via your coronary arteries.
