Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) or intravascular echocardiography is a medical imaging technique that employs a specially designed catheter with a small ultrasound probe attached to the distal end. The catheter's proximal end is connected to computerized ultrasound equipment. It enables the use of ultrasound equipment, such as a piezoelectric transducer or CMUT, to visualize the endothelium (inner wall) of blood vessels from inside blood vessels out through the surrounding blood column. IVUS uses a camera-like device to allow a clinician to see into the artery. IVUS can quantify the proportion of plaque narrowing and provide information about the type of the plaque. It may also indicate what was previously known as "re-stenosis" (a recurrence of the plaque buildup that may have previously been removed). There is evidence that this is not a re-stenosis, but rather the IVUS's ability to detect accumulation that was missed during an angiography and angioplasty.
