CARDIAC DEVICE IMPLANTATION
A tiny battery-operated device known as an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is inserted into the chest to identify and treat irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). When necessary, an ICD administers electric shocks to the heart to help it return to a normal rhythm. If you have a heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia) with a dangerously rapid heartbeat that prevents your heart from pumping enough blood to the rest of your body, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, or if you are at high risk for developing one, typically due to a weak heart muscle, you may require an ICD. A pacemaker, an implantable device that can stop dangerously slow heartbeats, is different from an ICD. An ICD attempts to immediately correct any irregular heartbeats by continuously monitoring them. It helps when the heart stops functioning efficiently (cardiac arrest). Your doctor might suggest getting an ICD if you have experienced any of the warning signs or symptoms of sustained ventricular tachycardia, which includes fainting. An ICD may also be recommended if you were able to survive a cardiac arrest. A history of heart attacks, and coronary artery disease, has weakened the heart and widened the heart muscle, and these conditions are additional advantages of having an ICD. A genetic heart disorder that increases the risk of dangerously fast heart rhythms, such as some forms of long QT syndrome, is another uncommon condition that may affect the heartbeat. A medical professional might suggest installing an S-ICD if the heart's structural problems make it impossible to attach wires to the heart through the blood vessels.
