CARDIAC DEVICE IMPLANTATION
An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a small battery-powered device placed in the chest to detect and stop irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). An ICD continuously monitors the heartbeat and delivers electric shocks, when needed, to restore a regular heart rhythm. You might need an ICD if you have a dangerously fast heartbeat that keeps your heart from supplying enough blood to the rest of your body (such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation) or if you are at high risk of such a heart rhythm problem (arrhythmia), usually because of a weak heart muscle. An ICD differs from a pacemaker — an implantable device that can prevent dangerously slow heartbeats. An ICD continuously checks for irregular heartbeats and attempts to correct them right away. When the heart stops beating efficiently, it helps (cardiac arrest). If you have experienced any of the warning signs or symptoms of sustained ventricular tachycardia, which includes fainting, your doctor may advise that you get an ICD. If you were able to recover from a cardiac arrest, an ICD might also be advised. Additional benefits of having an ICD include a history of heart attacks and coronary artery disease that has weakened the heart and a widened heart muscle Other rare conditions that may affect the heartbeat include a genetic heart condition that raises the risk of dangerously fast heart rhythms, such as some forms of long QT syndrome. If there are structural issues with the heart that make it impossible to attach wires to the heart through the blood vessels, a medical professional might advise installing an S-ICD.
